5-Day Zanzibar Island & Spice Relaxation Package
Five days is where a Zanzibar holiday starts to breathe. Two nights in Stone Town covers the heritage walk, a spice estate and a Prison Island boat trip without rushing. Three nights on the coast is enough for one excursion and two days that are genuinely free.
The structure matters more than the length. Doing the cultural content first and the beach afterwards means you arrive at the coast with nothing left on the list, which is the point of a beach. Reversing the order tends to produce a nagging sense of unfinished sightseeing.
The excursions included are the ones we consider worth the time. The Stone Town heritage walk, because the town is unreadable without it. The spice estate, because Zanzibar’s entire modern history sits in those plantations. Prison Island for the tortoises, which is more interesting than it sounds. And Jozani on the transfer day, because the red colobus is endemic and easily seen.
Beyond that, the coast is deliberately unstructured. Safari Blue, Mnemba snorkelling, diving, kitesurfing lessons and sunset dhows are all available locally, and we would rather you chose them on the day according to the weather and how you feel than committed to them in advance.
Planning your trip
Practical planning. The itinerary runs over 5 days, which sets the pace: each additional day reduces transfer pressure and gives the guide room to respond to conditions rather than follow a fixed schedule. We quote fees at the tariff period current at the time of booking, since park, conservation and crater charges are revised periodically and are a significant share of the total cost. Yellow fever certification is required if you are arriving from or transiting a country with risk of transmission, and travel insurance covering medical evacuation is a condition of travel on all our programmes.
Season. June to October is dry and breezy on the coast, while December to February is hot and calm with the best underwater visibility. The long rains around April and May bring the heaviest weather, some seasonal closures and frequent cancellation of boat excursions. November brings short, usually brief rains.
Local conduct. Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim. Beachwear belongs on the beach; shoulders and knees should be covered in Stone Town, villages and markets. Ask before photographing people. Reef-safe sunscreen matters in the marine conservation areas, and standing on or touching coral kills it.

Trip itinerary
Day 1: Arrival and Stone Town heritage walk
Airport or ferry collection and transfer into Stone Town. An afternoon guided walk through the old quarter covering the former slave market memorial, the Old Fort, the Old Dispensary and the carved doors, finishing at Forodhani Gardens for sunset.
Day 2: Spice estate and Prison Island
A morning at a working spice estate inland from the town, with clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, cardamom and vanilla cut and tasted as you walk.
In the afternoon, a boat crossing to Changuu, Prison Island, for the Aldabra giant tortoise colony, the ruined quarantine station and shallow reef snorkelling from the small beach.
Day 3: Jozani forest and transfer to the coast
Depart Stone Town with a stop at Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park for the groundwater forest walk and the mangrove boardwalk, with the endemic red colobus along the forest edge.
Continue to your coastal hotel, arriving in time to settle in and swim.
Day 4: Coast at leisure
No fixed programme. Options arranged locally include the Safari Blue sailing day, a Mnemba Atoll snorkelling trip, diving, a kitesurfing lesson on the east coast, a village walk or a sunset dhow.
Or nothing at all, which is a legitimate use of the day.
Day 5: Coast and departure
A final morning on the beach, then the transfer to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, 60 to 90 minutes from the north or east coast.
Late flights allow time for a last swim or lunch before departure.

Accommodation

Stone Town properties are converted merchant houses with thick walls, rooftop terraces and frequently steep stairs. Coastal properties are selected according to whether you want all-tide swimming in the north or the wide tidal beaches and kitesurfing of the east.
FAQs
Why put Stone Town first?
So that you reach the coast with nothing left to do. Sightseeing after a beach stay tends to feel like an interruption, whereas a beach after culture feels earned. It is a small structural choice that makes a real difference.
Can I swap Prison Island for something else?
Yes. Safari Blue, a Mnemba snorkelling trip or a cooking class can all replace it. Prison Island is included as standard because it is short, close and works for all ages, but nothing is fixed.
Are lunches and dinners really not included?
Deliberately not. Eating out is a genuine pleasure in Zanzibar, from Forodhani street food to beach restaurants, and tying you to a hotel meal plan would remove that. Half board can be added if you prefer.
What is the best time of year for this?

Do boat excursions run to a fixed schedule?
No. Departure times move with the tide, sometimes by several hours day to day, and sandbank stops only exist at lower water. Build one flexible day into any short island stay, because strong monsoon winds can also force a reschedule.
What should I know about local customs?
Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim. Beachwear is fine on resort beaches but shoulders and knees should be covered in Stone Town and villages. Ask before photographing people. During Ramadan, daytime eating in public is limited and some restaurants change their hours.
Is travel insurance required?
Zanzibar has required visitors to hold travel insurance in recent years, enforced separately from mainland Tanzania. We confirm the current requirement and the approved arrangement at the time of booking.
Is the water safe to drink?
No. Use bottled or filtered water, which hotels provide, and avoid ice in informal settings. Malaria prophylaxis is generally advised for the islands; discuss it with your doctor well before travel.
How far in advance should I book 5-Day Zanzibar Island & Spice Relaxation Package?
For peak months, meaning July to October and the Christmas and New Year period, six to twelve months ahead. Camps and mountain permits in those windows genuinely sell out. For green season travel, two to three months is usually sufficient.
