4-Day Classic Northern Circuit (Tarangire, Serengeti & Ngorongoro)
If there is a default Tanzanian safari, this is it. Four days is the point at which the northern circuit stops feeling compressed: Tarangire gets a proper day, the Serengeti gets two nights, and the crater gets a full floor allocation, all without the itinerary collapsing into a series of transfers.
The sequence matters. Tarangire first, because it is closest to Arusha and breaks the westward drive. Serengeti in the middle, because two nights there is the minimum that justifies the distance. Ngorongoro last, because the crater sits on the return route and descending on the final morning means you finish on the densest wildlife day rather than starting with it.
What you get across four days is a realistic shot at all of the big five, three fundamentally different ecosystems, and enough time in each that your guide can respond to sightings rather than watch the clock. Tarangire’s baobab and elephant country, the Seronera kopjes and river valley, and the enclosed crater floor are each distinctive enough that the trip does not blur together.
The main honest limitation is the northern Serengeti. The Mara River crossings at Kogatende are four to five hours beyond Seronera and cannot be reached on this itinerary. Travellers whose primary objective is a river crossing should look at the seven day migration safari instead.
Planning your trip
Practical planning. The itinerary runs over 4 days, which sets the pace: each additional day reduces transfer pressure and gives the guide room to respond to conditions rather than follow a fixed schedule. We quote fees at the tariff period current at the time of booking, since park, conservation and crater charges are revised periodically and are a significant share of the total cost. Yellow fever certification is required if you are arriving from or transiting a country with risk of transmission, and travel insurance covering medical evacuation is a condition of travel on all our programmes.
Season. June to October is the classic dry season, when vegetation thins, water sources concentrate wildlife and roads are at their most reliable. December to March brings green landscapes, calving on the southern plains and lower rates. April and May are the long rains, when some tracks become difficult and a number of seasonal camps close.
In the parks. Stay in the vehicle unless your guide confirms a stop is authorised, keep noise low near wildlife, never feed animals and take all rubbish out with you. Off-road driving, drones and unsupervised walking are prohibited or restricted across the national parks and conservation areas. These rules exist because visitor pressure is the main long-term threat to the places you have come to see.

Trip itinerary
Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire, overnight Karatu
Depart Arusha at 07:00 and reach Tarangire mid morning. A full day on the northern river circuit follows, where the permanent Tarangire River draws dry season herds and the baobab woodland provides the park’s signature backdrop.
Picnic lunch in the field. Late afternoon exit and transfer up the Rift Valley escarpment to Karatu for dinner and overnight, positioning you for an early start west.
Day 2: Karatu to the central Serengeti
Early departure through Lodoare Gate and across the Ngorongoro highlands, pausing at the crater rim viewpoint. The road then drops onto the short grass plains, passing Oldupai Gorge, and reaches Naabi Hill Gate around midday.
From Naabi you game drive north west into the Seronera valley, arriving at camp in the late afternoon. This is a long day, but the last three hours of it are already game viewing.
Day 3: Full day central Serengeti
A full day on the Seronera circuits with a picnic lunch in the field. Morning covers the river course and kopje systems where leopard rest and resident lion prides hold territory.
The afternoon is directed by current sightings and guide radio traffic. Between December and April, if the herds are on the southern and central plains, the day shifts towards them.
Day 4: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater and Arusha
An early game drive as you work east out of the park, exiting at Naabi Hill and crossing the plains back to the crater highlands.
Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for the floor game drive, with lunch at Ngoitokitok Springs, then ascend in the mid afternoon and transfer to Arusha, arriving in the evening.

Accommodation
Three nights on full board: one in Karatu and two in the central Serengeti. Keeping both Serengeti nights in the same camp avoids a repack in the middle of the trip.

FAQs
Is four days enough for the northern circuit?
It is the shortest itinerary that covers all three headline destinations without feeling rushed. Five and six day versions add a second Serengeti sector or a cultural day, but four days delivers the core experience honestly.
Can I fly one leg to save time?
Yes. A common variation flies Seronera to Arusha on the final day, which removes the long drive back. That does mean skipping the crater on the return, so we usually restructure the crater to day one or two if you want the flight.
What is the longest driving day?
Day two, Karatu to Seronera, at roughly six to seven hours including gate stops. The final third of it is inside the Serengeti, so it converts to game viewing rather than pure transfer.
When is the best month for this itinerary?
June to October for dry season concentrations and easy road conditions, or January to March when the southern plains hold the calving herds. April and May bring the long rains, lower prices and genuinely muddy tracks.
Will I see the big five on this trip?
Lion, elephant, buffalo and leopard are all realistically possible on the northern circuit, and rhino are seen in the Ngorongoro Crater with reasonable frequency though usually at distance. No operator can guarantee sightings of wild animals and we will not pretend otherwise.
Is a private vehicle included?
Road-based itineraries use a private 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, exclusively for your party, with a guaranteed window seat. Fly-in itineraries use camp-based vehicles shared with a small number of other guests, and a private vehicle can be added at extra cost.
What should I pack for a safari?
Neutral coloured layers, a warm fleece for early morning game drives, sun protection, binoculars and a camera with more storage than you expect to need. Soft-sided bags are required on any itinerary involving light aircraft, where the limit is typically 15 kilograms.
How much should I budget for tips?
Guidance rather than obligation: around 20 to 30 US dollars per vehicle per day for the driver-guide, and 5 to 10 dollars per guest per day for camp staff, pooled. We will give you a specific breakdown for your itinerary before departure.
How far in advance should I book 4-Day Classic Northern Circuit (Tarangire, Serengeti & Ngorongoro)?
For peak months, meaning July to October and the Christmas and New Year period, six to twelve months ahead. Camps and mountain permits in those windows genuinely sell out. For green season travel, two to three months is usually sufficient.
