7-Day Ultimate Zanzibar Tropical Beach & Culture Holiday
Seven days is enough to see Zanzibar properly rather than sampling it. The itinerary covers the historic town, the spice economy, the island’s only national park, the two best marine excursions and, unusually, both coasts.
Staying on both coasts is what distinguishes this from the shorter packages. The east coast at Paje and Jambiani has enormous tidal range, wide sand flats at low water, reliable wind for kitesurfing and a quieter, more local feel. The north at Nungwi and Kendwa allows swimming at any state of the tide and has the better sunsets and more developed dining. They are genuinely different holidays and a week lets you have both.
The marine content is the strongest available on the island. Safari Blue runs from the south west through the Menai Bay conservation area with reef snorkelling, a sandbank and a seafood lunch on Kwale Island. Mnemba Atoll off the north east has the best condition reef reachable from the coast, along with resident dolphin.
Even with all of that, there are free days built in. A week on an island should not be a schedule, and roughly a third of this one is deliberately unplanned.
Planning your trip
Practical planning. The itinerary runs over 7 days, which sets the pace: each additional day reduces transfer pressure and gives the guide room to respond to conditions rather than follow a fixed schedule. We quote fees at the tariff period current at the time of booking, since park, conservation and crater charges are revised periodically and are a significant share of the total cost. Yellow fever certification is required if you are arriving from or transiting a country with risk of transmission, and travel insurance covering medical evacuation is a condition of travel on all our programmes.
Season. June to October is dry and breezy on the coast, while December to February is hot and calm with the best underwater visibility. The long rains around April and May bring the heaviest weather, some seasonal closures and frequent cancellation of boat excursions. November brings short, usually brief rains.
Local conduct. Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim. Beachwear belongs on the beach; shoulders and knees should be covered in Stone Town, villages and markets. Ask before photographing people. Reef-safe sunscreen matters in the marine conservation areas, and standing on or touching coral kills it.

Trip itinerary
Day 1: Arrival and Stone Town heritage walk
Airport or ferry collection and transfer into Stone Town. An afternoon guided heritage walk through the old quarter covering the former slave market memorial, the Old Fort, the seafront and the carved doors, finishing at Forodhani Gardens.
Day 2: Spice estate and Safari Blue
Depending on tide timing, either a morning spice estate visit followed by a free afternoon, or the full day Safari Blue dhow cruise from Fumba with reef snorkelling, a sandbank stop and a grilled seafood lunch on Kwale Island.
We set the order once the tide table for your dates is known.
Day 3: Jozani and transfer to the east coast
Leave Stone Town with a stop at Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park for the forest walk and mangrove boardwalk, with the endemic red colobus.
Continue to the east coast at Paje or Jambiani, arriving early afternoon. The tidal flats here at low water are a striking landscape in their own right.
Day 4: East coast at leisure
A free day. Kitesurfing lessons, a village walk to Jambiani, a seaweed farming visit at low tide, or simply the beach and a book.
Day 5: Transfer to the north coast
A road transfer of around 90 minutes north to Nungwi or Kendwa, where the tide has minimal effect and swimming is possible at any hour.
An afternoon at leisure, with the option of a sunset dhow cruise from the beach.
Day 6: Mnemba Atoll snorkelling
An early departure for the Mnemba Atoll, the best condition reef accessible from the Zanzibar coast, with two snorkelling sessions and a strong chance of resident bottlenose and spinner dolphin in the channel.
Return by late morning, leaving the afternoon free.
Day 7: Departure
A final morning on the north coast, then the transfer to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport, roughly 90 minutes away.

Six nights across three bases: two in a Stone Town heritage hotel, two on the east coast and two on the north coast.
Moving three times in a week is a deliberate trade. It costs a little time in transfers but it is the only way to experience both coasts, which are genuinely different. Guests who would rather unpack once can consolidate into a single coastal base and we will rebalance the excursions accordingly.

Is moving between three hotels too much?
It is the main trade-off in this itinerary. Transfers are 60 to 90 minutes each and the coasts are genuinely different, which is why we think it is worth it. If you would rather stay put, we will consolidate to one coastal base without losing any excursions.
Which coast will I prefer?
Most people prefer the north for swimming and dining, and the east for atmosphere, kitesurfing and the extraordinary low tide landscape. Seeing both is the surest way to know, which is the argument for this itinerary over a single base.
Why is the Safari Blue day not on a fixed date?
Because it depends on the tide. The sandbank only exists at lower water and the dhows need depth to leave Fumba. We fix the day once we have the tide table for your dates, which is usually a few weeks ahead.
Can this follow a mainland safari?
Yes, and it is an excellent combination. Flights from Arusha or the Serengeti take around 90 minutes. Our twelve day bush to beach itinerary is the pre-packaged version if you would rather book both together.
Do boat excursions run to a fixed schedule?
No. Departure times move with the tide, sometimes by several hours day to day, and sandbank stops only exist at lower water. Build one flexible day into any short island stay, because strong monsoon winds can also force a reschedule.
What should I know about local customs?
Zanzibar is predominantly Muslim. Beachwear is fine on resort beaches but shoulders and knees should be covered in Stone Town and villages. Ask before photographing people. During Ramadan, daytime eating in public is limited and some restaurants change their hours.
Is travel insurance required?
Zanzibar has required visitors to hold travel insurance in recent years, enforced separately from mainland Tanzania. We confirm the current requirement and the approved arrangement at the time of booking.
Is the water safe to drink?
No. Use bottled or filtered water, which hotels provide, and avoid ice in informal settings. Malaria prophylaxis is generally advised for the islands; discuss it with your doctor well before travel.
How far in advance should I book 7-Day Ultimate Zanzibar Tropical Beach & Culture Holiday?
For peak months, meaning July to October and the Christmas and New Year period, six to twelve months ahead. Camps and mountain permits in those windows genuinely sell out. For green season travel, two to three months is usually sufficient.
Can this itinerary be customised?
