9-Day Honeymoon Luxury Safari & Bush Retreat
The mistake most honeymoon safaris make is treating the trip as a wildlife itinerary with rose petals added. Couples who have just been through a wedding are usually tired, and a schedule of 05:30 alarms for nine consecutive days is not a honeymoon.
This itinerary is structured around alternating intensity. Active game viewing days are followed by days with nothing fixed at all. The bush retreat component in the middle of the trip has no scheduled activities: you can take a drive, take a walk, or take neither. That flexibility is the actual luxury.
Where the itinerary is active, it is at the top tier. A private vehicle and senior guide throughout, premium camps positioned seasonally in the Serengeti, and two nights in a crater rim suite looking down into the caldera. Private dining, bush breakfasts and sundowner setups are arranged as a matter of course rather than as paid extras.
The trip is designed to end well rather than to maximise parks. Guests who want to add Zanzibar afterwards should look at extending with our beach packages; the bush to beach itinerary is the pre-built version of that combination.
Planning your trip
Practical planning. The itinerary runs over 9 days, which sets the pace: each additional day reduces transfer pressure and gives the guide room to respond to conditions rather than follow a fixed schedule. We quote fees at the tariff period current at the time of booking, since park, conservation and crater charges are revised periodically and are a significant share of the total cost. Yellow fever certification is required if you are arriving from or transiting a country with risk of transmission, and travel insurance covering medical evacuation is a condition of travel on all our programmes.
Season. June to October is the classic dry season, when vegetation thins, water sources concentrate wildlife and roads are at their most reliable. December to March brings green landscapes, calving on the southern plains and lower rates. April and May are the long rains, when some tracks become difficult and a number of seasonal camps close.
In the parks. Stay in the vehicle unless your guide confirms a stop is authorised, keep noise low near wildlife, never feed animals and take all rubbish out with you. Off-road driving, drones and unsupervised walking are prohibited or restricted across the national parks and conservation areas. These rules exist because visitor pressure is the main long-term threat to the places you have come to see.

Trip itinerary
Day 1: Arrival and Arusha
Private transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport to a boutique lodge on the slopes outside Arusha. No activities scheduled.
An unhurried afternoon, a briefing with your guide over dinner, and an early night.
Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire
A late morning departure to Tarangire, entering for an afternoon game drive along the river circuit among the elephant herds and baobabs.
Overnight in a luxury treehouse or tented suite, with a private dinner arranged on the deck.
Day 3: Tarangire at leisure
A day with no fixed programme. Options include a morning game drive, a guided walk in the buffer area, or simply the pool and the view. Your guide is available throughout but nothing is scheduled.
Day 4: Tarangire to the Serengeti
Transfer west, by road through the crater highlands or by light aircraft depending on your preference, arriving in the Serengeti in time for an afternoon drive.
Settle into the camp that suits the season, with sundowners on the plains.
Day 5: Full day Serengeti
A full day with your private guide, paced entirely to your preference. Bush breakfast in the field, long stops at sightings, and a return to camp whenever suits.
Day 6: Serengeti, optional balloon
An optional pre-dawn balloon flight over the plains with a champagne bush breakfast on landing, followed by a relaxed morning.
Afternoon drive and a private dinner setup under the stars.
Day 7: Serengeti to the crater rim
A final morning on the plains before working east across the short grass, with a guided stop at Oldupai Gorge.
Arrive at a crater rim suite in the late afternoon, in time for the light on the caldera.
Day 8: Ngorongoro Crater floor
First light descent for the crater game drive with a private picnic setup, covering the Lerai Forest, the swamps and the Munge stream.
Afternoon free at the lodge, with the option of a guided highland forest walk along the rim.
Day 9: Crater highlands to departure
A relaxed final morning, then the transfer through the Karatu highlands to Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport.
For couples continuing to Zanzibar we arrange the connecting flight and the island transfer.

FAQs
Why are there days with nothing planned?
Because that is what makes it a honeymoon rather than a wildlife tour. Couples arriving straight from a wedding are usually exhausted, and nine consecutive dawn starts is not a rest. The unscheduled days can always be filled if you want them to be.
Can we add Zanzibar at the end?
Easily, and most couples do. A flight from Arusha or the Serengeti to Zanzibar takes around an hour and a half. Our bush to beach itinerary is the pre-built version, or we can simply extend this one.
Is the balloon flight worth it for a honeymoon?
Most couples say yes. It is expensive and the alarm goes at 04:30, but the flight and the bush breakfast afterwards is consistently one of the moments people describe when they get home.
How private is a private vehicle really?
Completely. The Land Cruiser and guide are yours for nine days, nobody else joins, and you set the schedule. On a honeymoon this matters more than any lodge upgrade.
Will I see the big five on this trip?
Lion, elephant, buffalo and leopard are all realistically possible on the northern circuit, and rhino are seen in the Ngorongoro Crater with reasonable frequency though usually at distance. No operator can guarantee sightings of wild animals and we will not pretend otherwise.
Is a private vehicle included?
Road-based itineraries use a private 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, exclusively for your party, with a guaranteed window seat. Fly-in itineraries use camp-based vehicles shared with a small number of other guests, and a private vehicle can be added at extra cost.
What should I pack for a safari?
Neutral coloured layers, a warm fleece for early morning game drives, sun protection, binoculars and a camera with more storage than you expect to need. Soft-sided bags are required on any itinerary involving light aircraft, where the limit is typically 15 kilograms.
How much should I budget for tips?
Guidance rather than obligation: around 20 to 30 US dollars per vehicle per day for the driver-guide, and 5 to 10 dollars per guest per day for camp staff, pooled. We will give you a specific breakdown for your itinerary before departure.
How far in advance should I book 9-Day Honeymoon Luxury Safari & Bush Retreat?
For peak months, meaning July to October and the Christmas and New Year period, six to twelve months ahead. Camps and mountain permits in those windows genuinely sell out. For green season travel, two to three months is usually sufficient.
Can this itinerary be customised?
