3-Day Serengeti National Park Express Safari
The Serengeti is roughly eight hours by road from Arusha, which is why three days is the practical minimum for including it. Anything shorter turns into a transfer exercise. This itinerary accepts one long driving day at the start in exchange for two genuine nights inside the park.
The Seronera valley in the central Serengeti is the base, and it is the right choice for a short stay. Permanent water in the Seronera River supports resident game year round, which means lion, leopard and cheetah are present regardless of where the migration happens to be. The kopjes around Seronera are classic leopard and lion territory and are among the most photographed granite outcrops in Africa.
The Serengeti covers close to 15,000 square kilometres, and it is important to understand that a short itinerary sees a fraction of it. The northern Kogatende sector, where the Mara River crossings occur, is four to five hours from Seronera. The western corridor is similarly distant. This trip is about the central plains done well, not about the whole park.
The return leg descends into the Ngorongoro Crater, which breaks the long drive back and adds a completely different landscape and a strong chance at the remaining big five species.
Planning your trip
Practical planning. The itinerary runs over 3 days, which sets the pace: each additional day reduces transfer pressure and gives the guide room to respond to conditions rather than follow a fixed schedule. We quote fees at the tariff period current at the time of booking, since park, conservation and crater charges are revised periodically and are a significant share of the total cost. Yellow fever certification is required if you are arriving from or transiting a country with risk of transmission, and travel insurance covering medical evacuation is a condition of travel on all our programmes.
Season. June to October is the classic dry season, when vegetation thins, water sources concentrate wildlife and roads are at their most reliable. December to March brings green landscapes, calving on the southern plains and lower rates. April and May are the long rains, when some tracks become difficult and a number of seasonal camps close.
In the parks. Stay in the vehicle unless your guide confirms a stop is authorised, keep noise low near wildlife, never feed animals and take all rubbish out with you. Off-road driving, drones and unsupervised walking are prohibited or restricted across the national parks and conservation areas. These rules exist because visitor pressure is the main long-term threat to the places you have come to see.

Trip itinerary
Day 1: Arusha to the central Serengeti
An early departure around 06:30 for the long westward drive. You pass Makuyuni and Mto wa Mbu, climb the escarpment through Karatu, and enter the Ngorongoro Conservation Area at Lodoare Gate, crossing the highlands with a stop at the crater rim viewpoint.
The road then descends onto the short grass plains, passing Oldupai Gorge and reaching Naabi Hill Gate, the Serengeti’s eastern entrance, in the early afternoon. From Naabi you game drive north west into the Seronera valley, arriving at camp in the late afternoon.
Day 2: Full day central Serengeti
A full day working the Seronera circuits with a picnic lunch in the field, which keeps you out during the productive middle hours rather than returning to camp.
The morning covers the river course and kopje systems where leopard rest through the day and lion prides hold territory. The afternoon works a different sector depending on current sightings and guide radio traffic. If the migration herds are within reach, the day is redirected towards them.
Day 3: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater and Arusha
An early morning game drive as you work east out of the park, exiting at Naabi Hill and recrossing the plains to the crater highlands.
You descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive on the floor, with lunch at Ngoitokitok Springs, before ascending and beginning the return transfer to Arusha, arriving in the evening.

Accommodation
Two nights on full board. The standard configuration is two nights in the central Serengeti, which avoids repacking and maximises time on the plains.
Options run from public campsite tented accommodation through comfortable permanent tented camps in the Seronera area to premium camps with private verandas and full service. Some travellers prefer to split the nights, taking one in the Serengeti and one on the crater rim, which shortens day three considerably; we are happy to configure it either way.
FAQs
Is three days enough for the Serengeti?
It is enough to experience the central Serengeti properly, which is a genuine achievement. It is not enough to chase the migration across sectors or to reach the northern river crossings. Set expectations around Seronera and you will not be disappointed.
Should I fly instead of driving?
Flying into Seronera airstrip removes roughly sixteen hours of road transfer across the trip and is a genuinely good use of budget on a short itinerary. Our five day fly-in safari is built around exactly that logic.
Will I see the migration?
Depends on the month. Between roughly December and April the herds are on the southern and central plains and are frequently within reach of Seronera. From June onward they move north and west, and a central base will usually miss them. We will advise honestly based on your dates.
Can I add a hot air balloon flight?
Yes, on the morning of day two. Balloons launch at first light from the Seronera area and land for a bush breakfast. It carries a significant additional cost and must be booked well ahead, particularly in peak season.
Will I see the big five on this trip?
Lion, elephant, buffalo and leopard are all realistically possible on the northern circuit, and rhino are seen in the Ngorongoro Crater with reasonable frequency though usually at distance. No operator can guarantee sightings of wild animals and we will not pretend otherwise.
Is a private vehicle included?
Road-based itineraries use a private 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, exclusively for your party, with a guaranteed window seat. Fly-in itineraries use camp-based vehicles shared with a small number of other guests, and a private vehicle can be added at extra cost.
What should I pack for a safari?
Neutral coloured layers, a warm fleece for early morning game drives, sun protection, binoculars and a camera with more storage than you expect to need. Soft-sided bags are required on any itinerary involving light aircraft, where the limit is typically 15 kilograms.
How much should I budget for tips?
Guidance rather than obligation: around 20 to 30 US dollars per vehicle per day for the driver-guide, and 5 to 10 dollars per guest per day for camp staff, pooled. We will give you a specific breakdown for your itinerary before departure.
How far in advance should I book 3-Day Serengeti National Park Express Safari?
For peak months, meaning July to October and the Christmas and New Year period, six to twelve months ahead. Camps and mountain permits in those windows genuinely sell out. For green season travel, two to three months is usually sufficient.
